As information and communication technologies become more ubiquitous and pervasive, they increasingly shape the ways we communicate, collaborate and establish new relationships. However, important questions need to be explored: are computers making us happy? Are new ways of interacting with and using technology actually improving the quality of our life, by enhancing our opportunities for growth and self-expression, and making us feel safer and more connected? The recent and growing interest towards these issues is paving the way for a new research area: “Positive Technology”.

All this - and much more – constitutes the field of research and teaching of Andrea Gaggioli (http://gaggio.blogspirit.com/), psychologist, a human-computer interaction researcher focusing on the intersection between psychology, neuroscience and emerging technologies. He is the founder of Positive Technology, a field that studies how new technologies can be used to promote mental and physical wellbeing.

He is specialized in human-computer interaction: participatory design usability: user needs assessment, design walkthroughs, competitive/comparative analysis, heuristic evaluations, task analysis, persona creation, field studies. He is currently a researcher and teacher at Psychology Faculty, Catholic University of Milan and Brescia, on the subjects of General and experimental psychology: flow, group creativity, computer-supported collaborative work.  He is senior researcher in Applied Technology for Neuro-Psychology Lab, Istituto Auxologico Italiano. He is a research collaborator for Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering where he investigated the effects of immersive virtual reality on cognitive and perceptual processes and designed and evaluated interaction techniques in immersive virtual reality systems.

Technodependency, hyperconnectivity, technostress, security, privacy, sustainability, these are some of the greatest issues connected with the use of technologies in our time, the so-called ubiquitous era, in which to each individual correspond thousands of computers. How can technology contribute to wellbeing? Technology can be seen as a tool that can release us from burden and extend our capabilities (Human-Computer Interaction) or as a medium to happiness (Positive Technology). The goal of Positive Technology is to design technologies that promote wellbeing and empowerment at individual, group, and social levels.
To understand Positive Technology we have to consider what Positive Psychology is: the “Science of Wellbeing”, whose goal is mainly understanding what makes people happy satisfied and fulfilled, emotionally stable, mentally healthy, functional, able to cope, successful and strong.

Martin Seligman Pioneer of Positive Psychology, said “I think with technology , entertainment and design, we can actually increase the amount of tonnage of human happiness on the planet . And if technology can in the next decade or two increase the pleasant life , the good life and the meaningful life, it will be good enough”.

The role of positive emotions is to provide the organism with nonspecific action tendencies that can lead to adaptive behavior, and therefore to broaden Thought-Action Repertoires (Fredrickson, 2001).
Joy leads to play, interest to explore, contentment to savor and integrate, love to all the above. Positive emotions build durable physical, emotional, intellectual personal resources.

CAN WE USE TECHNOLOGY TO INDUCE POSITIVE EMOTIONS? Gaggioli, for example, (2009)  (http://publicationslist.org/andrea.gaggioli) has studied the use of mobile narratives for reducing stress in commuters.

He believes that technology-based intervention strategies may foster positive emotions suited for preventing and treating problems rooted in negative emotions, such as aggression, anxiety , depression , and stress -related health problems. Another application is according to A. Gaggioli, Virtual Reality, as a source of Flow (Gaggioli et al., 2004; 2005), which may grant opportunities for action, task complexity, multimodal feedback and high control.
