Alla base della strategia di Microsoft, per come è possibile percepirla oggi, c'è la volontà di creare una piattaforma di sistema operativo flessibile su qualsiasi dispositivo tecnologico essa venga montata, x86/64 o PC WOA.
La flessibilità si adatta anche alla possibilità di passare in ogni momento, a seconda delle necessità e della pratica d'uso, tra una interfaccia standard con mouse, tastiera e desktop Windows e una di tipo tattile.
Le diverse versioni di Windows disponibile offriranno la stessa interfaccia per il mondo delle APP e gli store che le contengono.
Le versioni di Windows 8 ad oggi previste sono quattro:
- Windows 8, versione ufficiale di Windows per piattaforme x86/64
- Windows 8, per PC e tablet con processori x86 ( da 32 e 64 bit ) e comprensivo di Windows Explorer, Task Manager, multi-monitor support
- Windows 8 Pro, per PC e tablet con processori x86 ( da 32 e 64 bit ), disegnato per professionisti che intendono utilizzare le funzionalità avanzate del sistema operativo per crittografare i dati, virtualizzare ambienti di lavoro, gestione dei dispositivi e connettività.
- Windows RT, conosciuto anche come 'Windows on ARM' o WOA. Disponibile solo pre-installato su PC e tablet con processori ARM. Conterrà versione ottimizzate per l'interfaccia touch tablet dei pacchetti office Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e OneNote. Questa versione offrirà agli sviluppatori un motore runtime WinRT, disponibile a partire da settembre, per tutte le nuove generazioni di applicazioni cloud, touch e webb app costruite con Windows 8 su architetture ARM.
